Studies have shown that up to 90% of those who use cannabis suffer from a form of Lupus and as the disease advances, the risk of death increases significantly. One of the main problems with Lupus is that the immune system itself begins to attack the body; this causes inflammation that can cause a lot of pain and discomfort for those who suffer from it. For this reason, treatment options for patients with cannabis Lupus syndrome are limited, as the medication used is not designed to target the immune system. However, researchers are still trying to find alternative ways to help treat patients suffering from the disease. A recent study has found that some patients with Lupus who were given medicinal marijuana showed signs of improvement in their disease over an extended period of time, proving just what the experts had been waiting to hear.
The research was conducted by the University of California, San Francisco, and published in the Journal of Alternative Medicine. The study was done on ten patients who were diagnosed with chronic forms of Lupus, namely two types that affect the musculoskeletal system (arthritis) and one that affects the cardiovascular system (myocardial infarction). All the patients who participated in the study had previously failed to respond to traditional treatments and all of them were given cannabis as a replacement for medical marijuana. The participants had to consume marijuana four times a day, which means that each of them had to consume a whole marijuana plant at least five times a day.
What the researchers found is that the cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound in marijuana, helped to improve the condition of the participants. Cannabidiol is also known to be beneficial to the body because it helps to keep tumors from growing. In fact, cannabidiol is one of the chemicals found in marijuana that has been found to prevent cancer development. This is why it is commonly included in cancer drugs; it has chemotherapy properties. What’s more, the scientists discovered that cannabidiol not only reduced inflammation in the body, but it also helped to increase the number of white blood cells that are produced in the body.
The results seem promising because the participants who were given cannabis showed an improvement in their arthritis symptoms. In addition, the participants who were given cannabis also exhibited a higher number of white blood cells in their blood. White blood cells are needed in order to increase the number of antibodies that can target certain diseases and to boost the immune system’s functions, such as increasing the number of antibodies needed to fight against infections and to increase the number of T-cells that are produced in the body.

The results were impressive and there are already two clinical trials currently being conducted with the intention of determining if the use of cannabis can help to manage patients suffering from different types of sclerosis. In addition to this, the participants who were diagnosed with Lupus were divided into two groups; one group was given cannabis and another group was not. The study found that those who were given cannabis had a significant reduction in the symptoms of their Lupus. This is the first study to use cannabis as a remedy for the treatment of Lupus.
Another part of the study focused on the blood flow in the body. Those who were given cannabis had greater activity in both cerebral arteries and veins. Cannabidiol has been shown to have a beneficial effect on blood vessels, which can be extremely useful in managing the symptoms of sclerosis. It has also been proven that cannabidiol has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. These are just some of the benefits of using cannabis for the treatment of Lupus.
